- full of expression
I really enjoyed looking through this artist’s work. Compared to my other two choices, this artist is much different due to the fact that all of his work is photography. This work in paticular stands out to me, because the artist is capturing everyday moments, and turning them into beautiful works of art. Anyone can take a picture of people in a crowd, but this artist shows the personality, the expressions of the people in his pictures. You almost feel like you are their due to the naturalness, and the bright colors of the scene. My favorite peice would have to be the first picture on his faces page, it shows an everyday scene in a city park. But looking at the expressions on the people’s faces, you can feel their joy, and you feel the overwelming need to be in that scene. This artist’s work gives you a new appreciation for life. And a new view of people’s lives, showing that everyone goes through the normal everyday activities, but he makes them magical.

Artist: Nancy Nicholson

- Uses stain glass windows to create her pieces
- Photographs in the squares giving it a washed out look as though it was painted with water colors
- Silhouettes of cityscapes
Looking through the list of artists on Mr. Miller’s word press site, I found a very interesting artist who goes by the name of Nancy Nicholson. All of her artwork is placed in the center of stained glass windows and uses water colors over top of the glass surface to create a watered down effect. She has twenty five years under her belt with experience in glass. Her signature works are that of a photograph of a cityscape in cased in the glass. Nancy explores the layering of light, color and dynamic forms of the urban environment

- Medium
- Perspective
- Style
For an artist of varied skill and style, look no further. While navigating his archive, stopping to read the story-like photo captions, it is obvious that Jonah Criswell is a very versatile creator. After clicking on a few graphite drawings, the next image will be a bright and colorful guache or oil. No matter the tool, brush or pen, no matter the surface, paper or panel, Criswell exhibits skill as he documents familiar scenes and objects from home and nature.
His use of value is obvious, but a more unique quality to Criswell’s art is the perspective he uses. Sometimes the view is simple for effect, but other times the angle is quite interesting. In addition, he often exaggerates, or even skews perspective, creating something of a mind-teaser.
Finally, one must comment the variation of style among Criswell’s body of work. Sure he can use many types of tool, but what is more impressive is his ability to manipulate each of them in different ways. Touring his post work, I am continuously surprised, as tight realism so followed by a compilation of vague strokes, refined gradients by coarse hatching. Visit Jonah Criswell’s site for an entertaining art show.

- Sketch
- Unconventional
- Scientific/mathematic looking
- Complex
- Colorful
Voigt’s work is very interesting to me because there is no real object that he is creating yet it is not entirely abstract either. I like that the work seems like he was sketching which looks as if there is some type of external use for the piece such as a use in math or science. Some of the work seems like it was very tedious to create which gives it a complex look with a simple idea or process behind it. I also like Voigt’s use of color which transforms the work into looking more like art than simply sketches.

Stefany Hemming
3/1/11
- Simple black background
- Realistic lighting
- Simple colors
- Looks like nests
The oil paintings of Stefany Hemming are very skilled and elegant. I loved the simplicity of a single object on a black background and her use of a solid color for the nests. Some nests are a natural green or tan color while others are a brilliant red, green, or blue. The lighting is very talented and seems like it would be tedious to work in and out of the intricate weaves of each nest. I would like to see her other work especially if it is of other subject matter.

Chakaia Booker

- Item collage
- Abstract
- Black
I like the art of Chakaia because of how the Items are assembled to create one jet black abstract item. The abstract objects almost look organic like pieces of a fly wing or feathers and so on, which I find interesting. In general, I think that the solid blackness of the objects work really well in combining the objects, it almost looks as if it is an explosion of oil rather than an actual object.

Herman Leonard is a very famous photographer, best known for his black and white portraits of everyone from Miles Davis to Albert Einstein. His portfolio is extensive, so I decided to focus on his portraits of famous jazz musicians, mostly from the early 1950’s. What I love most about his style is its raw, natural feeling. His photos aren’t posed, they’re candid and real. He used the dark, smoky bars and small music halls which were most commonly performed in to his advantage, perfectly encompassing the atmosphere in his work. I love the shots where he captures the lighting, smoke, musician, and audience, all in one. He also shot musicians “behind-the-scenes”; laughing with friends, signing autographs, struggling with writer’s block in their personal studios. I would definitely recommend checking out all of Herman’s work!

- In a lot of his pieces, he does two almost exact things but in a different color or tool to show comparison
- I like how he uses two completely different things to create the same image
- He has a variety of materials and uses things such as staples which i like a lot.
- Ian will use watercolor and ink and overlap them to show the difference between not overlapping and using one of the materials by its self and i like how that looks.
Ian Williams is who i did my community connection on because i know him, and i actually like the art he does, he doesn’t try to replicate an actual thing or person, but he is into more capturing the difference between materials. He also shows how things are different from one little thing thats changed, or also how they’re the same.

-Primarily dark colors
I was attracted to the two large abstract paintings in the airport immediately. This was probably brought on by our recent study in abstract painting, but they were still very intriguing and noticeable on their own. After seeing these paintings along with other art throughout the airport (look it up Mr. Miller, the Nashville airport has some really great exhibits!) I looked further at Justin’s art. Not at all to say that his work is boring or uninteresting, but he is somewhat repetitive in his materials and methods. I like his most recent and his oldest work best, because they seem to have to most variance and are more colorful as well. I wonder how he gets his affect, it does not say. Also, reading his bio, he sounds like a very smart and interesting guy.

George Krause
- Black and white
- Backlit subjects and interesting lighting
- An emphasis on lighting
- Solitary subjects
- Simplicity
George Krause’s work is entirely in black and white which is very appealing to me. He is able to powerful images with his strong contrast and clarity. I found his set of models very interesting mostly due to his lighting. Krause’s approach was very simply and repetitious but unique because of the lighting from behind. The lighting left his subjects feeling soft and angelic, and difficult to tell where the background met the subjects. His work is often focused on a single subject which he eloquently portrays to stand out. The backgrounds are important but merely act as a way for the main subject to remain prominent. All of these elements throughout his work strike me as being extremely simple yet having a strong emotion and is very alluring.

Kimber Berry
- Bright colors
- Frenetic
- Abstract
- Pulls the eye around the art
- Psychedelic nature
I was very interested in Kimber Berry’s work because at first the art grabbed my attention with the bright, radiating colors. The technicolor work is also very frenetic having its own type of energy about it. I loved the how abstract it was which made it easy to interoperate the art in your own way. The natural flow of the colors allowed for your eye to move smoothly around the piece. This flow made it seem to me, almost like a psychedelic nature landscape, with an often sky looking background with naturally shaped color formations.

Kevin Sonner 5/4/10
- Fruit as a motif
- Abstract background
- Element’s of surrealism
- Color scheme
- Interesting use of spaces
- Identifiable objects among unidentifiable backgrounds
I enjoyed Kevin Sonmor’s work because it dealt with some of my favorite forms of art. He used abstract art as a background to subjects such as fruit giving his paintings a surrealist feeling. He also depicts horses giving an ominous feeling through both the abstracted background and the horses’ color and demeanor. Kevin also created interesting and appealing feelings through his use of color. I loved the placement of fruit and use of spacing to build on the sense of surrealism. Aligned in columns and rows or paired with flowers and horses, the fruit added an out of place aesthetic that exhibited his deliberate control of placement. I also liked his concept of using identifiable objects, such as fruit and horses, and place them in abstract settings. He also managed to abstract a typical background with a horse to give it a surrealist feeling. I greatly appreciated the blending of abstract art and familiar objects to create a mixture of art forms.
John Issac 5/4/10
- Surreal sculptures.
- Juxtaposition.
- Interesting use of background.
- Detailed and gruesome wax sculptures.
- Unique Photographs
- Fascinating uncommon subject matter.
I am really interested in John Isaacs’ very unique approach to art. I’m very interested in sculpture, especially surreal sculptures, and his art captivates me very well. He uses a lot of juxtaposition to give a mood or to show his opinions. I like the pictures of some of his sculptures in the outdoors or other nonconventional scenery. It keeps his work fresh and feeling new and non repetitive. He does a lot of work showing gruesome pieces of meat using wax sculptures. John shows the meat with usually with part of the animal or human allowing you to see what it’s supposed to be from. He also uses very accurate details with his wax sculptures. I love the sculptures that he did of fat people because they are very exaggerated, look extremely realistic and also has a shock quality about them. His pictures are usually some type of portraiture but it is strikingly unique. John lets you put a story to his photographs and many are mysterious because he makes it seem as if something may be missing. I like that he uses very different subject matter than what I’m used to seeing. His work feels very new and very refreshing.

I really liked looking through this artists’ work. Her sculptures are so different in many different ways and she makes every one of them come to life. I liked her wooden sculptures the most because each of them looked very real and the patterns on the wood were very exquisite.

I really like this artists movement towards his own style and feel. I really liked how he created his pieces and his diversity of the art. I really want to know how he constructed his pieces. Is it metal? Or it is wood or plastic? I dont know, that is what i would want to know.

- middle eastern scenery and people.
- culture atmosphere
- digital photos
- arabic towns
I enjoyed this artists pieces. The way he promotes or reveals the culture of middle eastern life is rich and real. He shows every angle and aspect of life in a Muslim town with pictures of people, places, and things. It is a collection of mind altering manipulations in a way because through the pictures, the artist wants us to realize how much different life is in America.

Caleb Lombardi 11.5.09
- Bright colors
- Shapes and lines
- Very modern but too much
- Simple and repetitive
- Same general colors.
- Mixed colors are rarely visible.
I was not impressed by this artists work. I feel like his work is the common excuse for artists who are out of ideas or just dont have broad and creative minds. I would enjoy them if only on of them were like that. It was just the same thing over and over which threw me off. Many people claim to be able to interpret art like his, and i always think, how? Is it possible? I dont see a theme or a character of some sort. There is no background or foundation. It is very plain and very nagging to my critiquing mind.

- Use of old photographs
- Focused and not focused objects
- Layers over photographs
- Mixed media
- Each piece has a theme
- Text on almost every piece
- Great style
I really enjoyed exploring this artists pieces. His variety of his work is so wide and his style of art is very influencing. Many of his pieces are similar too. But his way of making each one different in their own way is so perfect. I loved the ways he used old time photographs in his work. I really like that style alot. Also, he used mixed media in every one of his pieces, which i really do admire and support. I am a huge fan of mixed media and i love to experiment with many different art tools and supplies. This artist is very inspiring to me and also a little discouraging. When I see an individual do something i love to do much better than myself, i start to lose faith in what I can do by myself. I really enjoyed going through each of his pieces.
